Saddam celebrated his birthday in 1999 by building Maqar-el-Tharthar, the so-called “Green Palace” which is the biggest and most elaborate of President Saddam’s palaces. It covers two and a half square miles and consists of a Presidential and VIP residential compounds; it is the second only to the President’s Tikrit residence in overall size. The complex was not bombed by Coalition forces but has been completely looted afterwards by Iraqis. (Photo by Marco Di Lauro/Getty Images)
